Can You Help a Family Member Immigrate?

For the vast majority of people, using a family member is the only way to get a green card. Only these relatives below can immigrate through a family member:

Relatives of a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR)

„ **Spouse

„ **Unmarried son or daughter (of any age) OR

Relatives of a US Citizen:

„ Spouse

„ Unmarried son or daughter (under 21)

„ **Married Child

„ Parent (ONLY if the US Citizen is 21 or over)

„ **Brother or Sister (ONLY if the US Citizen is 21 or over)

**Important note: Those relatives marked with ** mean that they have to go on a waiting list. Some of these waiting lists are very long. In some categories, the waiting lists for spouses and unmarried children of Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) hardly move at all, making the possibility of getting residence very slim. The solution in these cases is for the petitioner (the person with papers) to become a US citizen.
